Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina, the worst storm ever to hit the city of New Orleans, has not only destroyed much of the city but has also taken the lives of hundreds. And for those who have survived this great tragedy putting the pieces of their lives back together has been even more difficult than surviving the storm.
H.I.S. Bridge Builders has decided to aid some of the evacuees who have been placed in our midst. Bridge Builders - Dallas serves with the City of Dallas in three different housing complexes (Turner Court, Rhoades Terrace and Cedar Springs) where approximately 20 Katrina evacuee families have been placed. Through our ministry we have made an intentional effort at contacting each of these families in order to pray with them, offer words of encouragement and some reassurance that God is still in control.
However once we have prayed, shared some hugs and words of encouragement, our new friends are still left with the despair of having to start all over. Through some financial contributions as well as partnering with two local churches (Lord’s Missionary Baptist Church and Prestonwood Baptist Church) we have been able to help in getting most of the families some clothes, food, furniture, beds, dishes, pots and pans. Through the body of Christ working together, many of the things that these families lost can be restored.
In the book of James, believers are given a clear lesson on showing their faith in Christ. James tells his audience, “Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, ‘Go I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:15-17).
Although Hurricane Katrina has brought about a lot of death, a great amount of destruction and feeling despair to millions of people, it also brought the opportunity for us to respond to the needs and well being of others. We have been given the opportunity to bring a little bit of light to a dark situation and to give a little hope in a hopeless time. One of our main goals as a ministry is to live out our faith by not only assisting to meet spiritual needs but also the physical needs of all those who have lost so much.
