Volunteer of the Month: David Adams
H.I.S. BridgeBuilders has been able to accomplish many great things by God’s grace and the faithfulness of His people. An essential component of H.I.S. BridgeBuilders is our volunteer participation. The Lord has been faithful to bring people alongside the ministry to be a part of the transformational process. The relationships that are built between the volunteers and residents are what often times complete the transformation process from hopeless to hopeful and forever change the lives of hurting people.
David Adams is a founding partner of HR Focal Point in Dallas, Texas. He has served with H.I.S. BridgeBuilders for close to 2 years now and faithfully volunteers his time each weekend. Recently, David was very involved in the establishment of the Ministry Home in the Bonton community. Here is a brief interview about how David got involved and why he continues to serve so faithfully.
Roger Sappington: How did you get connected to H.I.S. BridgeBuilders?
David Adams: Our daughter (Jacqueline) was invited to a BridgeBuilders event in 2007. Due to the fact that she was 12 at the time, I took her to the event. We continued going and I got involved in working with groups of residents to mow yards, clean empty fields, and perform other beautification processes. Soon, my wife Dara and our other two daughters were also coming to Turner Courts to get involved with the Children's ministry.
Roger: How have you been involved with the ministry?
David: Vacation Bible School, Bible studies, various work activities, and many of the scheduled events (Community Fellowship, Adopt-a-Block). We have also spent time with kids from Turner Courts and had them come to our house for various activities and sleepovers with our children. We have also donated to the ministry when God has enabled us to. We also attempt to be encouragers of the more established members of the ministry.
Roger: Why do you continue to serve?
David: When we first came across BridgeBuilders, I was thinking in terms of a one way Bridge from north Dallas to South Dallas. After a few times down there, my ignorance was revealed, and I now realize that the Bridge goes both ways. We try to do as much as we can, but we feel we receive much more from the people in Turner Courts than we give to them. The time we spend participating in all aspects of the ministry helps us realize how much more active, faithful and serving our family could be. On one of my first two trips to Turner Courts, an old lady asked me why I was there. I told her that I brought my daughter Jacqueline down to work in VBS. She said "I didn't ask you why your daughter was here, I asked you why you were here". That has motivated me ever since.
Roger: What most excites you about the work that H.I.S. BridgeBuilders does?
David: We are most excited about the fact that we participate in continuing relationships. We have fostered many friendships through which we receive such a blessing. It is wonderful to know that our daughters are so excited to go to Turner Courts each weekend and are really disappointed if we can't go. We also like the fact that we can see the fruits of the labors of people from Turner Courts and from people of the North Dallas area. One of my favorite things is seeing young children of all ethnicities playing together, with no regard to background or economic status. If we can instill the importance of this into the makeup of our 3 children, then we feel confident that they will be better witnesses for the Lord than we have been. I like the below verse because we feel that more mature members of the ministry treat us as honorable, so we can grow along with those we attempt to serve and those we attempt to convert to the body of Christ. There are many times that more mature members of the faith could do the job better or quicker than it is performed by us, but they allow us to work alongside them.
1 Corinthians 12:12-26
On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.
We are extremely grateful for the work that David and his family have given to H.I.S. BridgeBuilders and appreciate the dedication they have towards serving the Bonton community. We are prayerful that David’s testimony will encourage you and others in your city to become a BridgeBuilder as well.
As you can see from the above interview there are many ways to get involved with H.I.S. BridgeBuilders and serve the beautiful residents of our cities. Please prayerfully consider what your role in this coming year will be with H.I.S. BridgeBuilders and how God can use you to transform a city one life at a time. If you would like to more information about how you can become involved with H.I.S. BridgeBuilders please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Karen Anderson. |
